Nikon SB-700 | Excellent Flash – Just Missing Power Feedback And PC Plug

Just received the Nikon SB-700 today from Amazon searching for 3 month wait – I i am not disappointed. I have been a Nikon user considering that 70′s, and have owned every FARRENHEIT and D pro bodies, and affiliated flash units. I have seen all the reviews through the internet criticizing Nikon for omitting the LAPTOP OR COMPUTER input and power input – they know as long as they included these features it would have killed sales of your SB900. Like others, unless I need maximum power from my flash (which can be rare); I can get by along with the SB600 and most recently, the SB400 for most of my (fill) flash work. I mainly use the flash for fill and get it on the camera 100% of times. For “walking around” the SB400 works great because of size and weight. When I really need to use bounce flash, I typically makes use of the SB600. I still own the SB800 plus SB900 but find myself rarely using them.
The Nikon SB-700 fills the gap – one of the best features of the flash are small size and weight (vs. the SB900); better to use controls (I hated the SB600/800 controls); and the hard plastic snap-on color correction filters. Nikon needs to make these (hard) filters for the SB900 – trying to use their gels and holder on the field is crazy – you is going to either lose or damage the gels once you are working under pressure. Also the bounce dome is also smaller than the large unit who comes w/ the SB900.
The Nikon SB-700 is the first Nikon flash I’ve used that seems to find the exposure right on. Normally I have to set the flash exposure to -0. 7 to obtain what I consider a normal subjection. I do not have to use this on the SB700. I also like the truth that Nikon has gone to switches (vs. menu) to switch from Auto so that you can Manual exposure – I care less within the switch for the flash coverage as it’s not a setting I change – although others who do change it will like that it’s easy to switch on the particular fly.
Back to the power input and PC sync input – steps fans of the Stobist are very unhappy regarding the inability to use their PC cords on their Pocket Wizards – most folks don’t especially like using the PC – Hot boot cords; one more thing to get wrong in the electrical chain. Personally – I miss the facility input for the Nikon battery packs – and although I’m certain Quantum will come out w/ a battery adapter to employ w/ their packs, I haven’t use my Quantum packs in years since I’ve changed into using the Nikon external packs that operate the AA’s.
That said – think the Nikon SB-700 will end up the de facto standard flash; additionally, the SB800 will continue to sell upon eBay and Craig’s list for more they’ll likely sold new (I’m keeping mine) for the Strobist fans.
As to the overheating challenge; haven’t had the unit long ample to see if it reacts identical to the SB900 – another review said that the unit slows down on recycle point in time before shutting down – I’ve had my 900 turned off; so I have to carry a backup in the event that.
As of today (12/13/10) looks for example Amazon isn’t even taking orders with the unit; if you are in a hurry suggest checking the local camera store – mine told me we were holding getting some in periodically -
The last word: if you are in the market in a Nikon flash – buy this one particular!
